A SHAMELESS conman duped an 85-year-old into handing over a three figure sum of money.

The man, who is described as being between 20 and 30-years-old, targeted the Springhill Road resident on Friday afternoon at around 2.30pm.

The boiler suit clad crook posed as a legitimate workman who was following up on genuine work which had been carried out on the property a few weeks prior.

He then asked the elderly woman for a settlement fee to finalise the work - however after handing it over she then contacted the firm who originally carried out the work and found that the man did not work for them.

Police have now launched an investigation in an effort to trace the man, who was last seen driving a long white vehicle with a ladder on the roof.

Community inspector Alan Dickson said: "We would be keen to speak to anyone who may have seen this vehicle or this man in the area in question at the time of the incident.

"This particular kind of crime can have a devastating affect on the victim, and we would encourage anyone who may have seen anything to contact us on 101."
