A BUSY Barrhead road is set to be closed for four weeks.

Aurs Road will be shut off to traffic later this month as the installation of Scottish Water's new £120 million drinking water network in East Renfrewshire and Ayrshire continues.

The route will be closed from Wednesday, September 28 to Tuesday, October 25 so that a power supply cable for a new water pumping station adjacent to Aurs Road can be laid.

As a crucial part of Scottish Water's ongoing pipeline project, which will benefit over 200,000 people, the road will be closed to all vehicles to facilitate the necessary works.

Aurs Road at Springfield Road up to the Ryatt Linn Reservoir was due to have been closed completely from Wednesday, September 14.

However, East Renfrewshire Council was notified by Scottish Water there was a delay in the works which will now begin at the end of this month.

Scottish Water has drawn up diversion plans which will see traffic leaving Barrhead for Newton Mearns re-routed via Darnley Road, Nitshill Road and Stewarton Road.

Though there will be no access to the Dams to Darnley Country Park from the Barrhead side of Aurs Road, the Newton Mearns entrance will remain open.

A spokesman for Scottish Water said: "The work that requires this road traffic management, the construction of a new pumping station at the Gorbals Water Treatment Works, is part of Scottish Water’s project to install a strategic water main which will benefit more than 200,000 people in much of Ayrshire and parts of East Renfrewshire.

"Scottish Water apologises for any inconvenience and thanks affected road users for their patience and understanding."

Any enquires relating to the works on Aurs Road should be made through the Scottish Water customer helpline on 0800 0778 778.
