A youth football club has won recognition in the UK Parliament following its impressive rise.

East Renfrewshire’s MP Kirsten Oswald presented Busby Girls AFC with an Early Day Motion she tabled at Westminster to mark their rapid growth and success.

Indeed, in less than 12 months the club has gained around 150 players.

The politician told the Barrhead News: “I was absolutely delighted to visit Millennium Park to meet over a hundred of the fantastic footballing girls of Busby AFC.

“It was obvious how much the girls enjoyed football and it was particularly pleasing to learn of the club’s inclusive approach, allowing everyone of any ability to take part.

“Increasing girls’ participation in football can only be a good thing and I commend the coaches for their exceptional efforts."

“I would like to wholeheartedly congratulate the coaches and players at Busby AFC," added Ms Oswald.

"It is because of their hard work and dedication that the club has ballooned in size over its first year.

“I wish everyone at Busby Girls AFC all the very best of the future.”

This year has also seen more than 100 girls from the club attend Hampden Park for the Scottish Cup Final between Celtic FC Ladies and Rangers FC.

The match on Sunday, May 28 coincided with the 150th anniversary of the Scottish Football Association and the game was the first-ever Women’s Cup Final to be played at the national stadium.

Eleven of the Busby girls were even lucky enough to be invited to line up on the pitch prior to the kick-off of the historic match.

Coach Garry Dickson said: “We were delighted to welcome Kirsten along to Busby Girls HQ and we were really humbled to receive this recognition.

“Everyone at the club is committed to making football as accessible as possible for girls of all ages and levels of ability.

“Winning and losing isn’t top of our priority list - giving girls the platform to build confidence, make friends and express themselves is.”
