SERVICES are to be held across East Renfrewshire to mark Remembrance Sunday and honour members of the armed forces.

Veterans, residents, councillors and local dignitaries will gather at war memorials in Barrhead, Neilston and Newton Mearns on Sunday, November 12.

The first event is at the war memorial beside Mearns Bowling Club, in Ayr Road, where a parade will muster by 10.40am.

It will then march off from Fairweather Hall at 10.50am to reach the memorial in time for an 11am service.

Meanwhile, members of the Neilston War Memorial Association are inviting local people to take part in the village's act of remembrance.

A parade will muster in Broadlie Road at 11.45am and move off when assembled before arriving at the war memorial at noon, when a short service and wreath-laying ceremony will be staged.

Community representatives are welcome to bring a wreath to lay on behalf of their organisation.

Tea and coffee will be available afterwards in the hall at St Thomas’ Church and anyone who would like to attend is asked to send an email to paul.o’kane.msp@parliament.scot.

In Barrhead, a parade will muster outside the United Services Club at 1.50pm before marching off at 2pm and arriving at Cowan Park for a 2.30pm service.

Provost Mary Montague said: “Remembrance Sunday is our annual opportunity to remember our armed forces and their families and honour those who have lost their lives in service for their country.

“Members of the armed forces from Britain and the Commonwealth play a vital role, so it’s important we continue to recognise their contribution and how they have shaped our past, our present and future.

“By holding two-minute silences at the services on Sunday, November 12, we will show our respect and gratitude to those who have fallen whilst fighting in World War One and later conflicts.”
