A pilot programme is giving Barrhead pupils the chance to learn tennis skills and take part in interactive maths activities before tucking into a nutritious meal.

UK charity Rackets Cubed has teamed up with East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure (ERCL), Tennis Scotland and Giffnock Tennis Club to offer the opportunity to children at Carlibar Primary.

Barrhead News:

The weekly after-school sessions, which aim to support children's happiness, health and confidence, are hosted at Barrhead Foundry.

Geoff Newton, president of the charity, explained: "The children are introduced to a racket sport, like tennis, so they are more physically active.

“They have additional STEM education in a more relaxed environment and they come together for a nutritional meal.

“The programme aims to build confidence, support pupils in learning new skills and it improves school attendance, too."

Barrhead News:

The initiative was brought to Barrhead and co-ordinated by Chris Rose, Active Schools coordinator for ERCL.

Barrhead News:

The pupils have been working with Dominic Iannotti, performance coach at Giffnock Tennis Club, to learn about the skills and techniques involved in the game.

The STEM element is provided by a teacher from Carlibar Primary school and supported by a pupil support assistant from the school.

Barrhead News:

Chris told the Barrhead News: "I heard about Rackets Cubed at a Tennis Scotland event and thought it would be great for some of the schools in Barrhead.

“I worked with the organisation, school and local partners to get the initiative off the ground.

“The pilot started in October last year and now we have 22 children attending.

“It's taken a great team effort to make this happen.

"Seeing the children playing tennis, having fun and enjoying a hot, healthy meal makes it all worth it."
