When Barrhead's Include Me 2 Club was saved from closure

We delved into the Barrhead News archives to pick out some of the stories from over a decade ago.

1. Pub punters raise the bar with hospice cash

Rumours Bar on Cross Arthurlie Street presented the Accord Hospice with a cheque for more than £2,000 as part of their annual donations to the facility. The money is raised through everything from pool competitions to sponsored walks.

2. Barrhead's Gala Day 2014

Barrhead’s Gala Day was very nearly a wash-out after the heavens opened on town’s biggest event. However community spirit was a live and strong and thousands of people braved the wet to appear in their thousands at the Cowan Park celebration.

3. Pupils take a tour for glimpse of future school

Pupils threw open the doors of their new school to show Barrhead High youngsters what they can expect. Boys and girls from Neilston and Uplawmoor welcomed the Barrhead News into Eastwood High. Eastwood High in Newton Mearns was replaced in a major £29m investment and the proposed new Barrhead High was set to be built by the same contractor and using the same architects.

4. Extension celebration for St Mark's 

A fantastic new £600,000 extension opened at St Mark’s Primary in Barrhead. Pupils, staff, parents and invited guests celebrated their new space at an official opening ceremony. 

5. Young performers get ready to take the stage

Jayne Arthur Theatre School were set to perform their annual Summer Stage Production at Paisley Town hall. 

6. Barrhead trio scoop top business awards

Following weeks of anticipation the winners of the East Renfrewshire Business Awards 2014 were revealed. 

7. Club saved thanks to generous donations

A Barrhead club was on its last legs before two generous East Renfrewshire charities offered a helping hand. The Include-Me-2 club was teetering on the brink of closure after several hundred pounds worth of equipment was destroyed in an accident. More than 170 adults from across East Renfrewshire with learning disabilities at the time attended the club every Tuesday night, however, the club’s very existence rested on them being able to find the funds to replace the expensive music system. Luckily East Renfrewshire Good Causes and the Rotary Club stumped up the funds to purchase replacement equipment.

8. Kids were on a roll at bowling club

Youngsters at an Auchenback primary bowled the experts over with their display at a local sports club. Regulars put St Mark’s schoolkids through their paces at Arthurlie Bowling Club when they visited the Springhill Road facility.
