ARTHURLIE boss Steve Kerrigan was pleased with their 2-0 win over St Anthony’s in the Sectional League Cup.

The visitors have been a bogey side for the Lie in recent years, and Kerrigan was pleased with his side’s performance.

He said St Anthony’s keeper kept them in the tie, pulling off a number of terrific saves.

Kerrigan said: “It was a good win, especially after the last few seasons. We’ve lost a few games against them, there was that bogey team hanging over us before we went into the game, but overall we did more than enough.

“I thought their keeper was outstanding and pulled off three unbelievable saves so all in all I think we were content.

“They were 2-0, he’s pulled one out of the top corner from Gary Smith he has also saved a reaction save and in the second half we looked really comfortable.

“We know we can keep the ball better than we did at times but all in all two goals against a team we’ve struggled against in the past and another clean sheet which is also very pleasing.”

And the Lie travel to Neilston on Saturday who have yet to play in the tournament having had a bye for the first round of games.

While some managers treat the Sectional League Cup as an extended pre-season, Kerrigan says his side have enough pre-season games under their belt.

He added: “You are still trying one or two things and you feel as if you can however we’re very much in the mindset that we want to be competitive. First and foremost we feel as though we want to win the game.

“We’ve had six games pre-season so we’re well down that line so we’re beginning to fine tune things to the point where we’re competitive and we want to win games and move forward.”

The Lie travel to Neilston on Saturday, and then face Benburb away on August 17 before hosting Pollok in the final group game on August 20.
